5 Hacks for Balancing Part-Time Gigs

5 Hacks for Balancing Part-Time Gigs

View in browser

Happy Monday, Service Professional!

Last week, we looked at how short-term side gigs can evolve into broader opportunities. Today, we’re sharing practical tips to help you stay on top of multiple commitments—especially if you’re juggling part-time or on-demand medical service work alongside a full-time job or other obligations.

Sign Up for Technical Gigs

1. Sync Your Calendars

Why It Matters: Missing a scheduled shift or misreading a date can throw everything off. How to do it:

Consolidate all obligations—day job, side gigs, personal events—into one calendar (e.g., Google Calendar, iCal). Use color coding (e.g., blue for personal, orange for MedServ) to spot conflicts at a glance. Set automated reminders one day and one hour before each shift.

2. Prioritize & Batch Tasks

Why It Matters: Jumping from one responsibility to another can lead to mental overload. How to do it:

Organize tasks by urgency and impact—tackle high-priority items first. Group similar tasks together (like paperwork or documentation) to minimize context switching. Reserve a specific window of time each day for side-gig work, if possible.

3. Keep Thorough Documentation

Why It Matters: Clear records of your hours, tasks completed, parts used, or travel expenses save time and minimize mistakes. How to do it:

Use cloud-based tools (Google Drive, Dropbox, or a note-taking app) so you can update logs from anywhere. If you receive service call details via email, forward them to a dedicated folder or label them for easy retrieval. At the end of each gig, spend a few minutes summarizing the key info—before you forget!

4. Communicate Early & Often

Why It Matters: Whether working for multiple organizations or fitting side gigs around your full-time role, clarity prevents scheduling mix-ups. How to do it:

Let MedServ or any service partner know your availability well in advance—especially if your schedule is tight. If a job runs longer than planned, give a heads-up as soon as you can. Don’t hesitate to ask for more details on a service call if it’s unclear.

5. Track your Income & Plan for Taxes

Why It Matters: As an independent contractor, you won’t have taxes automatically withheld. Surprises at tax time aren’t fun. How to do it:

Keep accurate records of all earnings from side gigs, plus any related expenses (travel, parts, etc.). Set aside a portion of each payment—somewhere around 20–30%—for estimated taxes or year-end filings, depending on your tax bracket and location. Consider using a simple accounting app or consulting with a tax pro to ensure you’re compliant and avoid penalties.

Bonus Tip: Self-Care Counts

It’s easy to burn out if you’re squeezing in extra gigs around an already busy schedule. Make time to recharge—sleep, exercise, or simply unplug for a bit. A well-rested service provider is a better service provider.
